The first results have been released from the V940-001 melanoma vaccine trial, and they are promising.
Harbour Cancer and Wellness was the lead site for this trial in New Zealand, working alongside our sponsor MSD, known as Merck in the United States, and research partners around the world. Harbour was the third highest recruiting site globally, meaning more New Zealanders took part through Harbour than through almost any other site anywhere.
The trial is investigating an individualised melanoma vaccine given alongside immunotherapy, for people who have had melanoma surgically removed and are at risk of it returning.
Why this matters for New Zealand
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world. Clinical trials give patients here access to new treatments years before they might otherwise become available, and every person who takes part contributes to knowledge that improves care for people with cancer everywhere.
What happens next
Fuller results from the trial are expected later this year. We will share more once they are available.
