Specific and tailored programs to meet your needs during diagnosis, treatment and survivorship are key according to latest research from the American college of sports medicine (ACSM)
‘Every survivor should avoid inactivity’ – the key message from the latest exercise in cancer guidelines published by The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
A roundtable of representatives from 17 different organisations evaluated the evidence supporting exercise in cancer prevention and survivorship. The focus groups aimed to develop guidelines and recommendations to encourage the implementation of specific and individualised exercise prescriptions for people with cancer, because not every cancer patient experiences the same diagnosis or treatment side-effects.
The guidelines are a fist of their kind, isolating different common side effects from a cancer diagnosis and treatment (from fatigue to lymphoedema) and giving specific exercise recommendations for each.
Our Oncology Physiotherapist Megan Schmidt says ‘the evidence supporting exercise through cancer treatment is now indisputable. Having worked in this field for several years, I have seen first-hand the huge impact exercise can have on physical, mental and emotional health.’
Megan acknowledges it can be daunting to know where to start with exercise, especially while dealing with a cancer diagnosis: ‘that’s why we encourage individualised exercise programmes with a trained oncology physiotherapist so that we can work out the best plan for each person.’
